Tenant owes many months of rent. Tenant is also married to my boss’s daughter. Daughter tells my boss that my accounting records are totally screwed up and demands a meeting to straighten me out.

I go to the tenant’s office for the straightening-out meeting.  Daughter is really angry!  She tells me she’s paid the rent every month and can prove it!   She gets out her big binder style commercial check book and shows me month after month how she’s paid the rent.  I can’t help but notice that the checks are still in the checkbook, each is still attached to the page and not torn out.  I point this out to her.  She says “Of course they are! I didn’t mail them to you! There’s not enough money in the account!”  I had a hard time getting her to understand that our accounting system required actual payments.
