An irate Tenant called me one morning:

Tenant:  I want you to stop putting flavoring in the air conditioning ducts!  The smell is really bothering me!

Me:   I’m sorry, but we don’t put any scents into the building air system.

Tenant:  OH MY GOD!  Are you calling me a liar?  I know what I am smelling and you have to stop putting flavoring in the ducts!

Me:  I’m not questioning that you’re smelling something but we just don’t put anything into the air system like that.  I want to help get to the bottom of this though.  What does the odor smell like?

Tenant:  Like you don’t know?  Ha!  Coffee.  It smells like coffee.

Me:  When do you notice it happening?  Is it when the air conditioning comes on?

Tenant:  It hits me as soon as I walk into the office and it smells strongly of coffee all morning.

Me:  Hmmm…well…could it be that you’re smelling the pots of coffee that your coworkers are brewing up in the morning?  Your office is close to the kitchen area.  That might be what you’re smelling?

Tenant:  What?  No that can’t be it!  You are doing this!  You’re making the air smell like coffee!  Why are you doing this to me?

She remained convinced that I was “flavoring the air” and nothing would change her mind.
