I managed a shopping center located on the corner of  busy intersection.  One morning I noticed a bunch of political signs had been stuck in the lawn area facing the intersection.  The owner of the property did not allow any signs to be posted on the property because he thought it looked sloppy.

I called up the local office of the political group and left a message for someone to call me back about the signs.  I got a call back from a really energetic guy who said he was helping to run the local campaign.

Me:  Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  I called about the signs that were posted in the lawn around Super Duper Shopping Center at the corner of This Street and That Avenue.  I need to have them removed.  Could you send someone over today to take care of that?

Sign Guy:  Why should I take them down?

Me:  You posted them on private property and without permission.  The property owner would like you to remove them.

Sign Guy:  That’s public property.  I don’t have to ask permission.

Me:  Well, actually you would still need permission on public property, but that doesn’t really matter in this case.  The shopping center is privately owned property and you don’t have permission for the signs.  Will you be sending someone over to remove them today?  Or if you’re busy, I could arrange to take them down and store them until someone can pick them up.

Sign Guy:  Look, I don’t know how long you’ve been working at this job but that corner is public property.  I’m not taking down the signs. I don’t even know why this is happening.

Me:  Let me explain this again, the land is owned by a real estate investor who holds legal title, he pays the taxes for it, he even pays the guy who mows the grass where the signs are located.  You put the signs up on privately owned property.  I’m going to take them down for you and will store them until you can send someone over to pick them up since this seems to be a problem.

Sign Guy:  Don’t you touch those signs!  The only problem is you!  You don’t understand that this is America!  I have free speech!  There is an election going on in case you didn’t know!  That corner is public property because it’s right out in the public airways where the public can see it!  It’s public domain!  What is going on here?  Why is this happening?

Me:   I’m not discussing this anymore.  I’ll be taking down the signs.  They’ll be stacked up next to the trash enclosure if you want to come get them.

Sign Guy:  Oh hey!  Hey!  I get it!  I get it now!  I know why this is happening!  This is happening because you’re a lesbian!

Me:  Nope.  This is happening because you’re a moron.
