Tenant: We have such a great connection. You’re like my best friend, I hope you know that!
Me: Well…um…thanks. That’s a nice thing to say.
Later….
Me: Hi there, I noticed we haven’t received your rent payment yet this month? When did you send that in?
Tenant: Oh I can’t pay the rent this month. I’ve got other expenses. I’ll try to make a payment next month.
Me: That’s not how this works. You have to pay every month or you’ll run up late fees and you could get evicted over this.
Tenant: What? But I said we were friends? Friends don’t bother friends about money. That is called class.
Me: Friends pay what they owe to friends. That’s called honoring your obligations.
Tenant: You’re not my friend anymore! I hope you’re happy.
I was happy with that.
