A retail tenant called to report that his neighbors in the shopping center were spying on him and he wanted me to make them stop. I asked what they were doing.
Paranoid Tenant: Every day they show up at the same time I do and park near my car. It’s like they’re following me! It’s creeping me out!
Me: They’re probably showing up at the same time because they open at the same time as you. They’re parking by you because that is the employee parking area. They have to park there. It’s nothing personal.
Tenant: They also walk by my place and look in the windows at me. If they see me they wave their hands at me!
Me: Perhaps they’re just walking by your shop to get to the mailbox and they’re waving at you to be friendly?
Tenant: No no no! You’re not getting it! They’re watching me! They have people coming and going all day and they’re watching me. They’re spying on me!
Me: You’ve not described anything that sounds like spying. It all just sounds like normal every day stuff at a shopping center.
Tenant: NO! You have to take this seriously! I’m in danger!
Me: In danger? From what? What sort of danger?
Tenant: They’re going to shoot up my windows! Or attack me in the parking lot! You don’t know what might happen! They’re dangerous! They have criminals coming into the place all day long! You have no idea what is going on here!
Me: So you’re telling me the cookie bakery, the toy store and the hair salon are full of criminals and they’re going to shoot at you? I don’t understand why you think that but it sounds like you need to call the police and get help if you’re really in danger.
Tenant: That’s just what I’m going to do! This is serious! My life is in danger!
The police came out and it turned out that there were criminals at the shopping center! The paranoid tenant and one of his employees were picked up on outstanding warrant charges.
