I delivered little ribbon wrapped bundles of daffodils to the tenants in an office building that I managed. There was a card included with each bundle that wished them a Happy First Day of Spring and thanked them for their business. Nearly all the tenants appreciated the little gesture. Nearly all.
Tenant: I want you to know that I threw away the things that you left at my office. I am offended and disgusted! I am writing a letter to the landlord to complain about it too.
Me: What? I don’t understand? You didn’t like the flowers? What was so offensive and disgusting?
Tenant: You may practice witchcraft or paganism or whatever you call it but I want nothing to do with it! I am offended by your attempts to put that in my office!
Me: Daffodils have something to do with witchcraft? I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about? I just wanted to share some springtime flowers with you.
Tenant: EXACTLY! You want me to worship the First Day of Spring which is a pagan holiday! Keep that away from me!
Me: I don’t know anything about worshiping any pagan holiday? The date is printed on my office calendar as the First Day of Spring. I heard it mentioned on the news today too. It’s just the date that is recognized as being the first day of the new season. I was only trying to brighten up your day. There’s no other underlying message.
Tenant: Of course you’d say that! I’m just so disgusted with this whole business!
